And in my opinion, the worst of all, not aesthetically speaking but more of a personal affront because I’ve actually seen this bag being worn with my own two eyes.

R.I.P. Alexander McQueen

“When you see a woman wearing McQueen, there’s a certain hardness to the clothes that makes her look powerful… It kind of fends people off. You have to have a lot of balls to talk to a woman wearing my clothes.”
- Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen died yesterday, at the far-too-young age of 40.  What a great loss to the world of fashion.  I really admired his designs.  The man had talent.  It was no accident that he won the British Designer of the Year award four times.   I loved his seemingly unapologetic rebellious streak (the self-described “pink sheep of the family”).   He certainly earned his reputation for controversy and shock tactics.   He dared you to question, “How far is too far?”  It is that awakening of fearlessness he tried to capture, and he did so beautifully.

And those runway shows.  Wow.  I’ll never forget when I first saw them.  A lot of designers try to push the envelope when it comes to their runway shows, but none could touch his.  They were unlike any other - shipwreck recreations, human chess games and life-size holograms (of my favorite supermodel Kate Moss, no less!).

My favorite McQueen show was from 1999, when Shalom Harlow wore white ball-gown down the catwalk and was subsequently jet-sprayed by two robots.  Unbelievable.

And oh how the celebs loved his designs.  Carrie Bradshaw, Olivia Wilde, Sookie Stackhouse, the First Lady.  And, of course, Lady Gaga.  Lady Gaga wouldn’t have her notoriety if not for McQueen, that’s for sure.  He made her, in a sense.

R.I.P. to a master of provocation, boldness, showmanship, creativity, and fashion brilliance.  Today I’m wearing my McQueen skull-print scarf as a sign of respect and appreciation of your talent.
